Question:
I’ve been in meetings and workshops run by facilitators. Can you tell me what a facilitator does?
Answer:
The role of the facilitator is demanding. They are not the leader of the meeting, but a resource for the group, responsible for directing the discussion and process so that the participants can focus on the content.
They keep the discussion going and on track, drawing out everyone and summarize the main points of the discussion. A good facilitator may also assign tasks with completion dates as well as prepare the after meeting write up or communication.
A good facilitator also ensures an effective meeting where there is a lively exchange of ideas, as the group works together in a positive and productive manner.
They ensure that everyone leaves the meeting feeling glad to have been involved by referring specifically to each person’s comments during the meeting and feel assured that their contributions are welcomed and valued.
