I think that not only do employees stop using their natural creativity and innovation they start to doubt whether they ever had it. Which is an even bigger tragegy.

Even though a company may stop whatever it was they were doing to demotivate their employees, getting their employees to believe again in their own ability to be creative and innovative can take much longer. And that's something no company can afford.

All employees are naturally creative and innovative. They are also naturally motivated and committed. They apply their natural creativity, innovation and motivation to whatever they are committed. When they join a company, they are committed to that company.

But then something happens that causes them to lose their commitment and motivation thus not releasing their natural creativity and innovation. So, if they are not being creative and innovative, the company has done something to shut that off. Stop doing whatever demotivates employees and you will have unleashed the mother lode of creativity, innovation and productivity.

Hint: Most managers use some form of the traditional top-down command and control approach to managing people, an approach that by its nature demeans, disrespects, demotivates and demoralizes employees.
